Full Time/Internship Opportunities

Job Title: Marketing, Communications & Events Intern

Queen’s Athletics & Recreation is accepting applications for interns in the area of both Sports Information and Events for the 2008-09 season. 

Two positions are available; one is a 32-week contract with the primary focus on Sports Information while the second is a 16-week contract with its primary focus on Events.

These positions will provide support and assistance to the successful operation of all activities in the Marketing, Communications, and Events unit for Queen’s Athletics and Recreation.  These positions will assist both the Communications & Sports Information Officer and the Home Events Coordinator.  Duties include, but are not limited to:
Communications and Sports Information

  • Write media releases, game previews/recaps, athlete bios
  • Assist with media & community relations initiatives
  • Assist in producing/developing publications – game day inserts, programs
  • Assist with pre-promotion of games (flyers, advertising, media visits)
  • Assist in coordinating/supervising media interviews
  • Assist with management of www.goldengaels.com (writing, inputting data, photos...etc)
  • Coordinate material for video information boards
  • Supervision of student assistants
  • Other duties as required

Events

  • Assist in preparation, promotion, and game day operations for all Queen's Athletics home games
  • Assist in planning special events, promotions, and championship events for Queen's Athletics
  • Coordinate, assign, train, and supervise student event staff
  • Coordinate game staff payment and assist in management of game day expenses
  • Assist in operation of Queen's canteen and Gaels store
  • Other duties as required

These internships are suited for an individual who desires to work in the field of public relations and/or event planning within the sports industry.  Candidates should possess excellent leadership, verbal and written communication skills, strong knowledge of a variety of sports and have the ability to work varying hours as well as nights and weekends.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office along with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop are considered a must for one of the two positions (Communications and Sports Information).  Knowledge of Canadian university and amateur sport is considered an asset.  

The 16-week internship will begin mid-August and end in early-December with a focus on Events; the 32-week internship will begin mid-August and runs until early April with a focus on Communications & Sports Information.  The Marketing, Communications and Events Internship will receive a $500.00 a week stipend to be paid bi-weekly.  This rate includes vacation pay and holidays that fall during this time will be paid holidays.

Casual/Part Time Opportunities

Queen’s Intramurals

Queen’s Intramurals hosts over 2,000 games in a variety of recreational and competitive sports.  Campus Rec utilizes paid student officials for the majority of our games.  NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.  A number of training courses and seminars are offered.  Officials are required for:

  • Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Soccer (Indoor & Outdoor)
  • Innertube Waterpolo
  • Ice Hockey

Game fee’s vary depending on experience & certification.  Interested officials should contact the Intramural Office when they return to campus in September.  intra@queensu.ca

Queen’s Intramurals also hires students to act as scheduling coordinators, sport chief officials, and on-duty supervisors during programmed activities.  Applications are now available from the Intramural Coordinator’s office (PEC 129), or online here.

Lifeguards/Instructors

Applications are now being accepted for the positions of Lifeguard/ Instructor for the Spring and Summer staff at the Queen’s University swimming pool.

Successful candidates must have the following current qualifications:

N.L.S. , RED CROSS INSTRUCTORS,  C.P.R. ,  and a  FIRST AID.

Applications will be accepted until the 28th of March 2008

There will be a staff  screening session for ALL applicants on Friday, March 28th, 2008 at 6:00pm in the swimming pool.  Bring a swim suit.

Instructional Programs is looking for energetic, motivating, athletic oriented individuals who strive to LIVE ACTIVE and who love working with the public. All positions are part-time. Positions available for the Spring/Summer include:

Group Fitness Instructor (must be certified)
Tennis Instructor
Recreational Fitness and Games Instructor
Personal Trainers (must be certified)
